Akataphronios and the Praetorian Prefecture of Italy from the Sixth to the Seventh Century

Salvatore Cosentino, University of Bologna

Under the unusual name of Akataphronios, several specimens of Graeco-Latin seals have been preserved, in which he bears the title of praefectus praetorio Italiae. There exists a specimen belonging to a namesake individual styled, according to his editor, as apo hypatōn (but perhaps apo eparchōn). The present contribution, after examining the sigillographic evidence concerning Akataphronios, aims to focus attention on the prefects and the structure of the Italian prefecture between the Graeco-Gothic war and the 640s.
